New CCTV Software
A team from Leeds University is working on a computer programme which would allow a camera to identify baggage being dumped and then track the person who left it. Standard CCTV systems rely on security staff to monitor screens to look out for suspicious activity but the Leeds academics are part of an international effort to develop artificial intelligence to do the job.
It is hoped the advanced computer technology, which is being designed for use on existing camera networks, will be able to distinguish between someone who has put a bag down for an innocent reason and someone behaving suspiciously.
Leeds University staff are working alongside experts from six different countries on the SUBITO (Surveillance of Unattended Baggage and the Identification and Tracking of the Owner) programme
Professor of artificial intelligence David Hogg, said: “Due to increased anxieties around the threat of terrorism, the monitoring and surveillance of unattended baggage has become a top priority across the globe. By employing advanced computer technology our system will make this kind of surveillance much less prone to human error.”
